A story from Baltlantis: Expats who have struggled with it know – Estonian is fiendishly hard to lean. It appears foreigners are not the only ones struggling to master language.

An extensive investigation by the Language Police has found that many of primary school and kindergarten workers cannot speak the language well enough to perform their jobs. Ninety-six out of 104 teachers from Tallinn kindergartens and Narva schools failed Estonian language checks carried out by the Inspectorate.

Twenty-three teachers were fined for failing to dust up on their Eesti Keelis after previous warnings.

In Narva, 45 high school teachers were tested but only two showed a command of the language, according to standards set by the government.

The head of Estonian Language Enforcement commented that "we have to ensure that the Estonian language has a state language status and that people can use Estonian in every area in their life. It is very difficult to understand what is going on in society – about politics, about the economy – if you do not understand Estonian enough.”
