Let Brussels pay for energy: Adamkus (3)

Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus says that the European Union should pay for the consequences of the shutdown of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP).

Speaking about Lithuania's growing spending on Russian gas at the European Council in Brussels yesterday, Adamkus stated: "Let Brussels pay directly to Moscow.”

"We will not raise the issue of Ignalina as the only specific matter. There are scores of other energy resources, and the EU will let us choose. Connection to Scandinavian electricity networks will probably enable us to solve these problems,” Adamkus

Adamkus added that the Lithuanian government had not given up on INPP and that they would continue to seek ways to keep it open longer until the end of 2009.

Economy Minister Vytas Navickas said in a meeting last week that the European community has two choices – let INPP stay open or pay up.

He mentioned the crippling results to the economy and the environmental impact that would see Lithuania producing more and more carbon.

If INPP is shut down at the end of 2009, prices for electricity may double as power stations will have to burn expensive Russian gas.

Currently Lithuania is an energy island and is not connected to Poland or Sweden, who are the two countries touted to be the country’s link to the European power grid.

Lithuania is only connected to its own and Russia’s energy systems.
