After almost six months of carrying cargo from the USA bound for Afghanistan via the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, both countries say they are happy with the arrangement.
The cargo put through Lithuania is a boon for the port, which is doing record turnover this year.
On May 24 in Washington DC, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilunas, US officials and representatives from logistics companies discussed further cooperation in carrying NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) cargo for the US to Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Meilunas met with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Ambassador Robert Blake.
The pair discussed ramping up the transportation through the port.
"Lithuania can offer to ship the cargo that the US administration needs very quickly, safely and at competitive prices to Afghanistan and back. The cargo has been shipped successfully through the Port of Klaipeda and the Lithuanian territory to Afghanistan since December 2010. We and our US partners are satisfied with the quality of services,” Meilunas said in the press release.
He also met with a member of the US Senate Richard Durbin, acquainted him with the current model of ISAF cargo transit via Lithuania told Durbin that Lithuania wants the arrangement to continue.
