Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas was admitted to hospital in the intensive care unit with early signs of heart failure on Tuesday, LNK television announced. On arrival at the hospital he requested to be tested for poisoning.

The mayor was released on Wednesday morning after being examined and cleared by doctors at the Santariskes hospital in the capital.

After arriving at the hospital he was admitted to the cardiological ward where his heart was monitored. The mayor was also tested for poisoning.

Zuokas’s wife and member of parliament Agne Zuokiene said that it is not clear yet how the Vilnius Mayor could have been poisoned, though the alleged incident may have happened on Monday night when dining.

On Tuesday morning the Zuokas began feeling ill and sought medical attention.

Zuokas only recently returned to power as mayor of Vilnius, reclaiming his old seat in April this year.
