President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended the opening ceremony for International Hansa Days in Kaunas.
According to the President, Kaunas, as one of the most honorable European cities in the times of the historical Hanseatic League, has restored centuries-old traditions of inter-city cooperation and is again spreading a word about Lithuania in the New Hansa Union. The International Hansa Days, which are held this year in Lithuania for the first time ever, attracts artists, businesspeople, representatives of tourism, culture, old crafts, municipal and town communities from many historical Hanseatic cities.
"Kaunas, which has been turned into the capital of the New Hansa today, has a large potential to become a prosperous European city. Being mobilized, cherishing their traditions and strengthening their relations with other European towns, the townspeople of Kaunas will acquire valuable economic, cultural and social experience, will open up new opportunities for business, for cooperation between people and between nations and for investment, and will create good prospects for the growth of their town," President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who is the patron of the event, said.
The International Hansa Days are celebrated in a different city of the New Hansa Union every year. The New Hansa Union established back in 1980 unites over 170 economically and politically active towns that have once belonged to the historical Hanseatic League. The purpose of this structure is to contribute to the development of economic, cultural, social and municipal unity in Europe. Kaunas joined the Hansa Union in 1991.
