The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, one of Lithuania's largest political parties, has re-elected Andrius Kubilius as its chairperson.
Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius retained his seat despite fierce competition from one of the most popular politicians in Lithuania, Speaker of the Parliament Irena Degutiene.
Out of almost 17,000 members of the party, 5,546 members voted for Kubilius and 4,628 voted for Degutiene.
Kubilius still needs confirmation for a new two-year term, which will be confirmed in June.
"I regards this vote by the members of the party as a very strong mandate for the continuity of my work as Prime Minister and work of the Government, for essential tasks, including financial stabilization, economic recovery affairs, energy and fight against corruption. By successfully implementing those tasks together with the ruling coalition in the parliament, I am convinced that we as a party will be able to come to the next general election (in 2012) and we’ll also win," Kubilius stated after the results were announced on May 21.
Kubilius has led the Conservative party since 2003.
