The State Forest Management Center announced that it sold 635 big game hunting licenses at auction this week, earning 201,500 euros in the process

The licenses, for the coming hunting season, cover six hunting districts. Turnout at the auctions was 79 hunters and all of the hunting licenses were sold.

"The large number of hunters participating and the higher than expected prices show that Estonia has a shortage of open hunting areas," said State Forest Management Center (RMK) chief specialist Kalev Männiste, who organized the auction. "The winners were mainly local hunters plus a number of veteran, former RMK hunters."

These hunting licenses come with obligations attached: game maintenance, taking samples for research, minimum levels for bagging small predators (at least eight per 1,000 hectares) and birds subject to population control (at least four). License holders must pay a deposit to guarantee performance of these obligations. Beaver hunting obligations also apply in areas prone to beaver-related flooding.

The proceeds of the auction will be divided between the six hunting districts based on the division of land owned. The average amount earned is 1.72 euros per hectare including tax. The proceeds are shared with landowners if the landowner signs a hunting consent agreement with RMK.

RMK manages 155,600 hectares of hunting land, of which private land makes up 23 percent.
