The Ministry of Justice expects to save around 100,000 litas (29,000 euros) each year by exchanging all of its cars into taxi services.

Up until now, the ministry has been using four service cars (three Ford Mondeos and one BMW) and spends around 190,000 litas per year for their use, including the salaries of two drivers and car amortization.

"Considering the fact that our cars are not very intensively used, we have estimated that purchasing transport services would be cheaper than maintaining current cars and their drivers. We are trying to save and therefore we are choosing the cheaper option. We hope that other state authorities, in turn, will make such an analysis, and the ones able to save in this way will follow the model," Minister of Justice Remigijus Simasius said.

Two of the ministry‘s cars have already been transferred to its subsidiary institutions which needed to renew their vehicle fleet, while another one will be transferred next week.

The ministry has already signed contracts with Martono taksi and Olego transportas. Contracts with the two companies have been concluded for a two-year term with a possibility to be extended for another year.

Within the city limits, employees of the ministry will use taxi services paying 1.35 litas per kilometer. In the case of longer-distance trips outside the city calculations will be made each time to find out which services – taxi or car rental – are cheaper to buy. Buying the latter, a one-day car rental will cost 150 litas plus 0,34 litas per kilometer.

Higher-class cars are to be rented for representation purposes only (delegations, the minister‘s trips to official events), while for everyday affairs ordinary cars are to be used.
