The government has plans to grant 4.4 million litas (1.3 million euros) to repair and maintain the John Paul II pilgrimage road, which consists of various churches, monasteries and holy sites.

More than one million litas is planned to go to the Tytuvenai church while another 800,000 litas will go to the Zemaiciu Calvary Basilica towers. Some 600,000 litas will go to St. Theresa church as well as the Gates of Dawn.

The sites are being upgraded for the purposes of tourism. Religious tourism is a big draw card for Lithuania, particularly among Poles who come by the thousands every year to visit the sites along the route and pray.

Another 600,000 litas will be spent on the site of the Hill of Crosses near Siauliai to carry out archaeological investigations and the install lighting in the area. There are also plans to build a church at the site.

Various other sites in the country will also receive funding.

The John Paul II pilgrimage road will be complete by 2013.
