The Polish Government has cast doubt over the necessity of connecting its electricity networks with Lithuania.
According to Polish experts, Lithuania is planning to build a low-capacity nuclear power station that may not be enough to provide Poland with sufficient electricity.
Lithuania is in desperate need of diversification of energy sources as it is now at the whim of Moscow. Lithuania currently gets all of its energy from its former master, Russia.
The Polish Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs thinks that such a link would benefit only Lithuania as the latter would re-sell the Russian electric power to Poland.
She said the Lithuanians themselves are not interested in building a large power plant and thus will satisfy their needs only.
Baltic partners from Latvia and Estonia have expressed their willingness to participate in the connection project.
Participation of regional partners is especially important to Lithuania as this improves the status of the project and thereby it is included into the European Union efforts to link isolated electricity markets.
However, in terms of power plant construction, nothing is being done to this end. Recently, the investor into Lithuania's new nuclear power plant from South Korea has withdrawn.
A new one may appear, but it is not clear when, claimed the Vice-Minister.
