A Swedish-Lithuanian electricity interconnection project is to get 131 million euros in European Union funding, the Baltic News Service reported on Friday.
The chunk of funding for work on the link has been green-lighted by a European Commission infrastructure financing committee but still needs a final blessing from the European Parliament, BNS said.
"It's a very important step," deputy energy minister Romas Svedas told BNS, adding that he hopes the funds will get EP approval in January.
Sweden and Lithuania plan to have the 1,000 MW, 350-km undersea cable in place by 2015.
The total cost of the project is estimated at 552 million euros, an official with Lithuania's state-controlled power company, Lietuvos Energija, told BNS.
Separately, Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas heads to Warsaw on Monday to discuss progress on LitPol Link, a Polish-Lithuanian power grid hook-up.
